Gender Equality Non-Discrimination and Inclusion: With and Within Research
This course provides an in-depth exploration of gender equality non-discrimination and inclusion in research, equipping researchers with tools to integrate these principles into their work. It consists of two parts:
- Introduction to Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination – Covers fundamental concepts of power dynamics, unconscious bias and privilege in research.
- Application in Research and Institutional Environments – Focuses on strategies for embedding gender awareness in research projects, tackling bias in data collection and promoting inclusive research environments.
The course, structured into multiple modules, incorporates design thinking, project-based learning and self-reflection methodologies, ensuring practical application across disciplines.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognise the impact of unconscious biases, stereotypes and privilege in research environments.
- Understand and apply gender-inclusive language in research and academic communication.
- Develop strategies to integrate gender equality and inclusivity into research projects.
- Identify and counteract discriminatory practices, including toxic speech in digital spaces.
- Implement best practices for gender equality planning within institutions.
- Understand the role of diversity in research teams and policy frameworks for inclusivity.
This course is designed for:
R1: First-Stage Researchers (PhD Candidates and Early-Career Researchers)
- Require foundational knowledge of gender biases and their effects on research outcomes.
- Need to learn how to apply gender perspectives in research and funding applications.
- Motivated by the opportunity to build a more inclusive academic environment.
R2: Recognised Researchers (Postdoctoral Researchers and Academics)
- Require advanced strategies for gender-sensitive research methodologies.
- Need to address systemic challenges related to gender discrimination in academia.
- Motivated by improved research credibility, funding success and institutional leadership opportunities.
R3: Established Researchers (Senior Academics, Principal Investigators and Policy Makers)
- Need to lead efforts in implementing gender-sensitive policies within research institutions.
- Face challenges in fostering inclusive and diverse teams in academic settings.
- Motivated by institutional responsibility, compliance with funding requirements and promoting research excellence.
