what is pattern?

PATTERN is a project of 3,5 years funded by Horizon Europe: the European Union’s funding programme for research and innovation.

what will pattern do?

PATTERN general aim is to promote the practice of Open and Responsible Research and Innovation (Open RRI) by developing and piloting training activities for researchers at all stages of their careers.

The training modules will aim, in turn, at strengthening their transferable skills, with the ultimate goal to empower Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and research organizations to embrace a transformative process to improve the excellence of the science conducted, the capacity within the European Research Area (ERA) to tackle societal challenges and the interaction between science and society.

project phases

project phases

PATTERN will start with a systematic mapping and a comprehensive analysis of the state-of-the-art of learning opportunities for researchers on Open RRI, integrated by mutual learning activities and co-creation workshops to identify emerging practices and barriers in Open RRI practices.

phase 1

Consolidation of knowledge

PATTERN has identified 8 main transferable skills in the context of open and responsible research, each covered by a PATTERN Consortium partner:

  • Open Access
  • Research Integrity
  • Management and Leadership
  • FAIR data management
  • Science Communication
  • Dissemination and Exploitation of results
  • Citizen Science
  • Gender, non-discrimination and inclusion in research
phase 2

Developing PATTERN Training Activities and Platform

During this phase, PATTERN training will be co-designed and fine-tuned within PATTERN Consortium to perfectly respond to the needs of end-users across 2 learning cycles, each 12 months long.

phase 3

Testing PATTERN Training Modules

Lastly, PATTERN will build upon knowledge and analysis carried out during the project lifetime to develop a set of policy recommendations addressing authorities and institutions responsible for researcher training.

phase 4

Evidence for Policy Development
